Anonymity and Virginity
Question: What do anonymity and virginity have in common?
Answer: You can only lose them once, so make it count.
I am pleased, proud and thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my first book. From Kaplan Publishing, on August 4, 2009:
DECLARATIONS OF A DINOSAUR;
10 LAWS I'VE LEARNED AS A FAMILY DOCTOR
by Lucy E. Hornstein MD
Yes, it's based on the Laws of the Dinosaur (newly updated) from the sidebar (look over there ==>).
Here's the blurb:
Solo family doctor Lucy E. Hornstein MD looked forward to practicing medicine since childhood. But somewhere between hanging out her shingle and the realities of 21st century medicine, she found herself becoming more and more of a dinosaur. With insight, warmth and biting wit, she shares her unique take on medical practice in DECLARATIONS OF A DINOSAUR: 10 LAWS I’VE LEARNED AS A FAMILY DOCTOR.For those faithful readers (both of you) who tune in regularly, you should know that the book consists entirely of new material that has never appeared on the blog. So even if you've read every word of my 700+ posts to date, you can still buy the book and be assured of 239 all-new pages of Dinoblather.
Borrowed, adapted and made up, each law contains the seed of a greater truth about modern outpatient medicine. With clarity and humor, Dr. Hornstein relates the growing frustration caused by insurance companies, specialists and unreasonable patients that has led so many other solo docs to throw in the towel, while she continues to battle it out on her own.
Illustrated at every turn with stories, vignettes, and anecdotes drawn from real life, Dr. Hornstein will have you chuckling at the ignorant advice from the guy in the health food store, and laughing aloud at the forthright pronouncements of her college genetics professor. Even while drawn into the trials and tribulations of solo practice, the reader will feel Dr. Hornstein’s fulfillment of her calling, as her joy shines through on every page.
Where can you buy it? Anywhere. It can be pre-ordered at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and elsewhere. If you can wait until August 4th, it will be available in bookstores everywhere.
Stay tuned for news about signings, readings and other events.

Yay, mazel tov!
Congratulations!
Mazel Tov Dino! Strong work.
Congratulations, Lucy! I'm looking forward to reading the book! Nice to put a name with a dinosaur.
Congrats Dr.Dino! This is a huge revelation. I don't mean your name. The question that has puzzled quite a lot of medbloggers has been, "Is Dino a he or a she?"
I always thought of you & referred to you in the feminine. Glad to know I was right :)
I am floored. I always thought you were a man. Always.
How nice to meet you!
Lucy -
Congratulations! I can't wait to read it! Let me know when your book tour takes you to NYC.
Peggy
Congrats Dr. Dino. Now I can stop calling you "he". ;)
I look forward to reading the book.
Good for you! I can't wait to read it.
Not too big of a jump... cranky has given enough tells so that anyone who cared probably could have figured out who you were anyway...
Will you come to Boston? Pretty please?
Why am I so surprised you are a girl? In my mind you were about 6'2" tall, around 230 pounds, and wore a necktie every day :)
The book is on my "need to get" list~~Congrats!
I was getting such a kick out of the image of a man baking with his son. I have nothing to point to that made me think you were man but still, a father and son bake-off gave me such warm fuzzies.
However, any son willing to bake with his mother is also good.
Congrats on your book!
Congrats! I was wondering when you were going to come out of the closet *wink*
I have my book on pre-order and am looking forward to having your signature grace the title page.
Cheers to you and great big hugs!
Congratulations Dr. Dino, or should I say Dr. Lucy Hornstein!
The first time I read your blog I just automatically assumed you were female. Then I heard others referring to you as "he", and was swayed by their "he"-ssumptions.
I'm glad to finally put a name with the Dinosaur :)
Can't wait to read the book!!
Hey Dr. Lucy! Glad to see you finally did the big reveal... I pre-ordered your book weeks ago from Amazon :-)
I wondered if anyone would stumble across it on Amazon and discover your 'true' identity before you outed yourself. You told me you weren't worried.
Now my darling daughter is so excited - she can't wait to 'steal' my copy. So, I think I'm going to have to buy her a copy of her own.
Next we'll have to get you on Oprah!
Congrats!!
ps. we'll both be in with our copies for your signature...
Congratulations, Lucy! Can't wait to read it. I have mine coming from Amazon.
Nice to know your name, although I'll probably still call you Dino.
Bone to pick, though: Your book is not available on Kindle. It's gotten to the point where I'm just about unwilling to read anything other than what I can get on my Kindle. Can I drag my feet long enough for you to work this out with your publisher and make me a happy Kindler?
That's so awesome! Congratulations!
Congratulations, Lucy!
Looking forward to reading it!
Congratulations!!
Congratulations Dr. Dinosaur-ette!
Congrats, Lucy
Matt from Western PA
(yes, I read your blogs!)
Congrats. Make a trip to the Clev. area, I'd love to have my book signed? I too was in the "he" camp. But, no matter what, love your perspective. Must pre-order the book.
Congrats!!!!! You sooooooo rock!
Whoa, I've been following your blog periodically, and all along I thought you were male! Maybe it was the first entry of yours that I read--the handwriting entry. I thought that only a male would write about how he is unusual in having good handwriting.
In a way I'm disappointed in you revealing your identity (not the fact that you're female which is awesome because solo female practitioners are even less common than solo male ones), but because the mystery is gone! We all had images of what you looked like in our heads. It's like when you read a book and imagine what the characters look like, and then when they make the movie, it ruins it for you.
Congrats on the book!
Hey Lucy, congratulations. Out of the "closet" at last.
I can't believe I thought you were a male for so long.
Dino's laws and Dino's blogging rules, they should be carved in stone somewhere.
Oh, Lucy, you were right; the cover turned out adorable, and I'm heartened at the outcome. May you sell a bajagillion, retire, and buy Hawaii.
that is so beautiful Dr. Dinosaur-ette! congratulation for that. i would like to share my home here.
Congrats! Hope it sells well!
I am shocked by this revelation. You're a human? I don't know why, but I always assumed you were a camptosaurus. I had such a wonderful time imagining you applying an ice cold stethoscope as only a ectothermic saurian can.
Congratulations on the book. I hope last weeks announcement about Simon & Schuster taking over sales for Kaplan translates into you getting greater exposure than you otherwise might have. Very exciting.
Wow! Very exciting news. And unlike GruntDoc (and apparently others!) I eventually got the feeling that you were female :)
Congratulations! Can't wait to read it.
I always knew you were a woman!!! It never even crossed my mind that you could be a man. Nice to meet you Lucy. I Looove your blog by the way and if you come to TN maybe I'll be able to get my book signed by you!!!
I am very impressed. It takes incredible patients and stick-to-it to get it done. You make the llama proud.
Is that advertising I see
Mazel Tov! Your laws are priceless. I did know your gender - seemed obvious from your writing. Look forward to reading it.
YEAH! Love the picture, it turned out great. See you soon.
MC
Congrats, Dr. Dino! I'm looking forward to reading your book! Now, if you'll pardon me, I'm off to amazon to pre-order it....
Man, do I feel behind the eight-ball. I'm just catching up on your blog entries & I hadn't realized you'd outed yourself. (Although the pic should have given it away. I told you that was the best one.) So I can call you my sister & not my sibling?
Let's hear it for appropriately ambiguous pseudonyms.
Love,
Kensington MD
Late to the game- but huge congrats anyway. And I was confused, first I thought woman, then man, then ???
Yay! Amazon just emailed me that my copy just shipped!
