Lancaster Banking
Now that DinoDaughter is no longer all the way across the state, it's much easier to pick up for the day and bop out to Lancaster for a visit. Just in case anyone has forgotten, this is an epicenter of Amish life. Horse-drawn buggies share the roads as nonchalantly as bicycles do in Center City Philadelphia. For those of you whose impressions of the Amish are frozen with their portrayal in the movie Witness, suffice it to say that there's a wide range of acceptance of modern conveniences.
Which is how you wind up seeing things like this in a drive-through banking lane:
(Regarding photographs:
They believe that the taking of photographs where someone is recognizable[emphasis mine] is forbidden by the Biblical prohibition against making any 'graven image'.Note that there is no way to identify anyone in this image.)

Husband has several Amish friends. I think most people would be surprised at how well-read some of them are.
Husband had a wonderful debate with one a couple of months ago regarding the candidates.
The Amish are not all quilts and pies :)
Oooh, did you go to Shady Maple?
Yes, but were they on their cell phones? My dad finds nothing so amusing as when a few of his Amish friends whip out their cell phones to catch an important business call.
This is what we call "traffic" in Lancaster County!
And when you goto the Wal-mart, check out the row of stables for them!
From what I understand, what you may have "Witness"d was actually a sect of Mennonite. They do the dress and buggies and the whole deal, but then you see them at Wal-mart and the bank, etc.
