Um, I don't like that one. Everyone has value. Who has the right to judge one person's value against another person's value? Wow.
Picture a person at his/her lowest point in life--adding nothing to society, perhaps he/she is homeless. Now imagine that person is your son/daughter. Would you still feel that he/she has no value? Is the brilliant mind who invented something that makes our lives easier, but is a jerk who beats his wife, of more value to society?
My uneducated grandmother told me to never judge a book by its cover--she was a wise woman indeed.
Value to someone or to society I think are two different avenues of thought. I agree with the fact that some people are a drain on society, but can fulfill an entire person's need for love and companionship.
I like this one, but I agree somewhat with DifficultPt as well. Too often I judge people just by their current state, never knowing what they may have been or will be.

I guess we need to think about what brings value to society. Someone who is a drain on society may be teaching someone else a lesson on compassion. Value doesn't always involve money, goods, or services. There are lessons for us to learn everywhere we look, even from people we tend to look down upon.
You are right--we may never know what a person has been or will be. Perhaps the trauma event is what turns a person's life around.
I didn't include Sid's other one, which was "Trauma happens to those who are asking for it", because that I have a problem with.
Here's hoing the Laws are taken in their intended cynical spirit of fun.
I do believe there are people who are an accident waiting to happen though!
